Nursing Survival Guide
Fall is here... the excitement of a new season is in the air. There is nothing quite as sweet as a newborn baby or the exuberance of a toddler to bring out the true essence of these autumn days. Yet the demands of this very family-oriented time can be exhausting, too. For some of us the fall means back-to-school and we begin to plan for Thanksgiving and the winter holidays that are just around the corner
We've designed this guide to help you find the perfect balance during this special time in your life, as you breastfeed your baby.
Breastfeeding in the cooler months
1. The foundation of your autumn nursing wardrobe should include a few favorite nursing tops- they really do make a difference and keep your back and tummy warm in cooler weather. Breastfeeding tops are designed to keep you covered while allowing easy access for feeding. No more exposed skin!
2. The nursing tanks you loved to bare your shoulders in all summer long transition beautifully into Fall and Winter. They layer easily under your favorite non-nursing tops and sweaters so you don't have to give them up just because you are breastfeeding. You can wear them under nursing tops as well for an additional layer of warmth with easy access.
3. Layering is in style right now and this look is perfect for nursing moms. Adding and removing layers is an easy way to regulate your temperature which can fluctuate as you are breastfeeding. Your favorite summer tees and tanks can get layered under sweaters or cozy fleece when the temperature starts to drop. Some nursing styles have the look of two-pieces without the bulk.
4. Be sure to choose outerwear that easily zips, snaps or buttons down the front rather than pull-over or jackets with complicated closures so when your little one is ready to feed you can be ready in an instant anytime, anywhere.
Six hints for nursing at a party
1. Wear comfortable clothes which allow discreet nursing.
2. Survey the environment for good nursing spots before you need them, or settle in the perfect chair ahead of time and gather your friends around you.
3. Anticipate your child's needs so you can nurse before she gets fussy.
4. Turn slightly away from others to get your baby started, adjust your top so your breast is covered, then turn back to rejoin the conversation.
5. If you or your baby prefers to nurse away from other people, invite a friend to join you for some quiet catch-up time.
6. Feel proud that you are nursing your baby and that you can share this special time together.
With the holidays approaching you may be making some travel plans. Whether it's a quick car trip to visit family or you are globe trotting with baby, nursing is convenient and easier than fussing with bottles.
Tried and true nursing travel tips
1. If you are traveling by plane, nursing is a great way to keep your little one calm. Also, the repeated swallowing will help equalize the pressure in baby's ears and prevent the discomfort that is often felt during take-off and landing.
2. Remember to pack water and snacks for yourself. Be sure to stay hydrated to maintain your milk supply.
3. The stimulation of new activities and admirers can overwhelm both children and adults. Head off trouble by taking frequent breaks throughout the day. A few quiet moments away from the hustle and bustle-nursing, reading a book, or just cuddling can rejuvenate everyone.
One of the most important things is to think ahead, and to make sure you are ready for anything. Developing a well planned nursing wardrobe is an important way to free yourself to do what you want to do and go where you want to go.
